In 1722, the French explorer Bernard de la Harpe founded a trading post at Arkansas and called it La Petite Roche (in German: the small rock, English: little rock). Racial riots occurred in the late 1950s. In 1954, the government abolished racial segregation in schools. On September 2, 1957, nine African-American students signed up at Little Rock Central High School. The then governor ordered the National Guard to refuse young people access to high school. The students began their first day of school on September 23, 1957, but it could not be completed before and within the school due to many troublemakers. On September 24, 1957, at the request of the Mayor of Litte Rock, the 10,000-strong National Guard was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who reports to the Federal Command, sent an additional 1,200 soldiers to the city. The school path and school were secured by the troops militarily.
