Adult Learning Alliance of Arkansas receives Difference Makers Award
At 73 years old, learning something new can be scary, but Lizzie Coleman is up for the challenge. The Adult Learning Alliance of Arkansas has been awarded the Difference Makers Award for its efforts to educate adults who can't read above a third-grade level. The award was given to Lizzie Coleman, who attends the Adult Literacy Council to learn how to read and write. According to the Adult Learning Association of Arkansas, 27% of adults in the state cannot read above the third-grader level. Since 1971, the alliance has worked to reduce these numbers. Rainwater, Holt & Sexton has named the nonprofit this month's Difference Maker and donated $1,000 to support adult literacy councils in about 20 counties across the state.
