AST Weather Blog: Weak tropical disturbance develops in the Gulf of Mexico

A weak tropical disturbance is developing in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida, but no impacts are expected here in Arkansas for now. A weak tropical disturbance has developed in the Gulf of Mexico, with a low to nearly zero chance of becoming a named storm. Regardless of its classification, it is expected to bring significant rainfall to central and southern Florida, with around 5 to 10 inches expected for the southern half of Florida. However, an area of high pressure over the southeast will prevent this from reaching our area, and the system will spread across Florida into the Atlantic before reaching open waters southeast of the Carolinas. There is a 20 percent chance of development until the weekend, when the area will weaken, potentially allowing tropical moisture to spread north and bring greater rain chances. Stay with the Arkansas Storm Team as we track this potential.

We’re nearly two weeks into hurricane season and so far things have been quiet. But as of Tuesday afternoon, there is a weak tropical disturbance trying to develop.

There is a very low to nearly zero chance that this becomes a named storm, at least in the Gulf of Mexico. But regardless of its classification, it will likely bring significant rainfall to central and southern Florida. Roughly 5 to 10 inches is expected for the southern half of Florida, which actually needs the rain badly.

Meanwhile, an area of high pressure over the southeast will block any of this from reaching our area. Instead, the system will spread across Florida into the Atlantic. When it gets into the open waters southeast of the Carolinas, there is a 20 percent chance of development into the weekend.

During that time, the area of high pressure across the south will weaken. This could open the door for tropical moisture to spread north and bring greater rain chances to our area early next week. Stay with the Arkansas Storm Team as we track this potential in the coming days.
