LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — For the past 19 years, Coach Kreth Simmons has hosted a youth tennis camp in southwest Little Rock, in hopes of teaching people that tennis can be for everyone.

Members of Coach Simmons' family bought the property at the Baseline Tennis Center years ago so that they could set up the tennis camp.

While Coach Simmons didn't play tennis growing up, his kids played tennis including his daughter Emmory who is also a coach at the camp. This upcoming school year, she'll play D1 tennis at Grambling State University in Louisiana.

"It means a lot to give back to the sport, especially with younger kids. I feel like a role model. So I feel like it's my job to give back and make them feel confident in this sport," Emmory Simmons said.

This year, the camp is being offered for free. Kids of various ages and levels have all gone to the camp to learn valuable lessons from Coach Simmons that they can take with them both on and off the court.

"He's more than a coach. He's like a father figure. I mean, I learned a lot from tennis and life with him. It's just it's a lot. It's more than just tennis, " said Charlah Aldridge, a camp participant who also plays tennis at Little Rock Central.

A goal for Coach Simmons is to make the sport accessible to all. In a state where basketball and football are the most popular, Simmons wants families to know that tennis is also an option.

"A lot of kids and parents don't know that this is for them and their kids. It's a diverse sport and you learn some valuable lessons playing tennis," Simmons said.
